Strong privateer debut for new Quaife QBE60G heavy duty in-line gearbox
Mk2 Escort driver Gordon Winning, the first privateer customer for Quaife's new heavy duty in-line replacement six-speed sequential gearbox, recorded a strong finish on this weekend's North West Stages, ending up 10th overall in the standings despite strong opposition from contemporary WRC machinery.
With a 250bhp Coltec Racing Engines built normally-aspirated Cosworth engine, Winning's Escort typifies the target market for Quaife's new six speed sequential gearbox, which is already receiving rave reviews from the likes of Caterham Cars and Ginetta.
“The new Quaife gearbox was perfect, the shift was smoother, the ratios were great and it didn't miss a beat all day, over 80 stage and 140 road miles,” Winning comments. “We even managed to set top five stage times with the car, so I can't get the grin off my face today!”
Mr Winning has a long association with Quaife Engineering's products, having run the previous Quaife Type 9 sequential gearbox in his Escort before taking some time out from rallying to upgrade his Ford. “The new Quaife 60G gearbox is a massive step over the old one and it can certainly handle the abuse in a tarmac rally car, as we're not particularly kind to it.”
